Shop Annabelle and arborescens hydrangeas for large rounded flower heads, reliable summer colour and white, green-tinted or pink blooms depending on the variety. These Hydrangea arborescens types are hardy deciduous shrubs that flower on new season’s growth, making them a practical choice for UK borders, large containers and mixed planting schemes. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Annabelle and stronger varieties? +

Classic ‘Annabelle’ produces large flower heads but can sometimes bend in wet weather. Newer varieties like ‘Strong Annabelle’ have stronger stems, allowing them to hold their shape more effectively.

Do Annabelle hydrangeas always flop? +

Not always. Flopping is more likely in rich soil or after heavy rain, but pruning and positioning can improve structure. Choosing stronger varieties can also reduce this issue.

When should arborescens hydrangeas be pruned? +

Cut back in late winter or early spring, as they flower on new growth. For more detailed advice, see our guide to pruning hydrangeas.
